Vevey experienced its first heyday in the belle époch period at the end of the 19th century. Even today, majestic hotels and a flower-bedecked lakeside promenade lined with palm trees continue to serve as reminders of this age. But Vevey is also a modern, regional centre which is headquarters to Nestlé, the international Food and Beverage Group. Its most famous inhabitant was probably the comedian Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last twenty five years of his life here. A monument dedicated to him stands on the lakeshore.

Built between 1918 and 1920, the first administrative headquarters of the Nestlé & Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. The Alimentarium is the world’s first museum dedicated to food. For more than 30 years, it has presented the many facets of human nutrition from a global and independent perspective.

Adopting a multi-disciplinary cultural, historical, scientific and nutritional approach, the Museum has established itself over the years as an essential reference in the field of food thanks to its audacious and offbeat programming.

The Giant Fork was designed by Neuchâtel plastic artist Jean-Pierre Zaugg for the Alimentarium’s tenth anniversary. The stainless steel work of art (8 meters high and 1.3 meters wide) has been planted in the lake off the museum since 2008.
